How to stay healthy this Fall

Here’s a question:  how are you feeling these days?  Are the germs making the rounds in your house?  It seems this time of year that more and more people get sick.  Experts tell us that the cold weather plays a big role in our health.

Here’s the thing, when it’s cold outside, we spend more time inside – closer together.  That makes it a whole lot easier to spread germs.  Shannon Waters is a doctor and a Mom.  She knows first-hand how this time of year can be a little tough.  But, the good news is even those yucky bugs can sometimes be beneficial.

“Every child is going to be sick and every child needs to be sick at some point to make their immune system work.  But, washing your hands and just being pro-active and looking for ways -- like washing their toys or helping them to understand hygiene -- is a way to keep them from being sick constantly,” explains Dr. Waters.

Dr. Waters says washing your hands is a good place to start when it comes to staying healthy. Washing your hands keeps the germs away.  Also, take a look at your kids’ toys.  Now might be a good idea to give them a once over with disinfectant, or throw them in the washing machine.

It’s also really important to get enough sleep.  Dr. Waters explains that sleep is the time our bodies rejuvenate and repair damage done during the day.  If you don’t get enough sleep, chances are you will get sick.

And, does this ever happen at your house:  one of your kids comes home with a bug and before you know it, you all have it!  If someone is sick, try to wipe down surfaces right away.  And, if possible, keep them separated from the rest of the family.  Some good ideas as we head into the cold weather.  For more information on staying healthy, click here .
