Kids and Hair Cuts

It's something every child will need at some point, but it's not always an easy thing to do.  I'm talking about haircuts.  Have you taken your children yet?  Do you do it yourself?  How do they like it?

If your children get upset at the sight of a spray bottle and scissors, they are not alone.  In fact, it's very common for our little ones to have some anxiety when it comes to hair cuts.

Kim Waters is the owner of Smilz 'N Stylz kids hair salon.  She's also a Mom.  So, she knows first-hand what this is all about.  She says a hair cut - especially a first hair cut - can be a little scary for children.  But, there are some things we can do as parents to make the experience a little easier.

"What you want to do is bring your kids to the salon they are going to be going to.  You want to let them play, visit it before they actually get a hair cut.  Sometimes it's a good idea to take them with you when you get your cut and let them see that it's not anything painful.  That it's actually a lot of fun," explains Kim.

Kim says it's also a good idea to practice with your children a bit before the hair cut appointment.  For example, spray their hair with a spray bottle, brush it, blow the hair dry.  It might be a good idea to bring an extra shirt because some children don't like to wear the cape.  They don't like their arms being stuck under it.  An extra shirt serves the same purpose of keeping the hair off, and you can take the shirt off when the haircut is finished.  Plan the haircut appointment around naps, meals and snack times.  And, it's OK to cancel or reschedule an appointment if your little one is sleeping or not feeling well.  If you take your child to an adult salon, be sure to bring some toys or things they can play with.
