This is such a special time of year! The holidays are traditionally filled with family, friends, good food - and, of course where are kids are concerned - lots of gifts! But, we want to make sure the true meaning of the season doesn't get lost. A good way to do that is to teach our children what this is all about by giving back. And, this time of year many of our neighbors could really use the extra help. Imagine not being able to buy gifts or a big holiday meal or, in some cases, provide even a roof over your children's heads in the cold winter weather.
Fox 10 is working with the Volunteers of America for our 10 Caring Gifts program. And, this year, there is a lot of need out there. So, not only can we help the community, we can also help our kids learn how to take care of each other. VOA'S Amanda Gonzales explains, "I think you have to teach them at a very young age. And, when children learn how to give at a young age, they become adults who know how to give and the cycle continues on."
Experts say a good place to start when it comes to teaching our kids about giving back is to set an example. Maybe toss your spare change into one of the Salvation Army's red kettles or pick up some extra groceries and, take them to the food bank. Volunteer your time. Get your little ones to help by wrapping gifts for toy drives, for example. Emphasize generosity. Help your children think of things they can give others. And, foster that creativity. Our little ones have some really great ideas -- things we may not have even considered! Make sure you choose the right projects because children respond to tangible results. It's really helpful when they can see that they're making a difference. And, make giving a family tradition. Volunteer your time together. Adopt a child or a family to shop for together. Doing these things as a family make them lots of fun for everyone involved.
