Panel allows Ten Commandment displays

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama House committee has approved a proposed constitutional amendment to protect the display of the Ten Commandments and other historic documents in public buildings.
    
The House Constitution, Campaigns and Elections Committees approved it by a voice vote Wednesday.
    
The committee action moves the bill within one step of achieving final passage in the Alabama Legislature.
    
A similar display of the Commandments and other historical documents has been posted since 2003 at the Alabama Capitol.
    
Democratic Rep. Juandalynn Givan of Birmingham said she thought the purpose of the bill was to allow posting of Ten Commandments but not other documents.
