Scrushy, Siegelman appeal nears end

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Former Democratic Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman and former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy appear to be near the end of the road in the appeal of their 2006 convictions on bribery and other charges.

Siegelman faces a new sentencing hearing before U.S. District Judge Mark Fuller on Aug. 3 and will likely be headed back to federal prison. Scrushy has already completed much of his sentence and is under home confinement in Houston.

Siegelman leaves behind what was once a successful political career and loyal supporters who plan to ask President Barrack Obama to grant a pardon.

Attorneys for Siegelman and Scrushy say when the U.S. Supreme Court recently declined to hear their final appeal it left unanswered a question about the use of campaign donations in federal bribery cases.
