Voters gear up for municipal elections

MOBILE & BALDWIN COUNTIES, Ala. (WALA) - Voters in two dozen cities in Mobile and Baldwin counties will head to the polls in August for their municipal elections.

More people are seeking the mayor's job in Prichard than any other city in Mobile County.

Incumbent Ron Davis will face four challengers in the upcoming election. They are: Teresa Fox Bettis, Severia Campbell Morris, Troy Ephriam, and Charles Hardin.

In northern Mobile County, Paul Nelson is seeking a fourth term as mayor in Creola. He said experience is a key factor in his race.

"I want to continue to build upon the foundation we built in the last four years. I want to work on the school issue for our children in Creola," he said. "I'm getting a lot of feedback from the citizens and I want to work on that. I think traffic safety is an issue out on Highway 43. Currently, I'm working with ALDOT on a third light out in the city of Creola."

Nelson will face political newcomer Jerry Presnall, who is a longtime pastor in the community.

"Some of the concerned citizens in the area come to me and asked me if I'd consider being in the mayoral race and give attention to it, and see if I could use my influence, maybe, to help get some things going in our area that are sort of not keeping up to par with the rest of what's going on around us," Rev. Presnall said.

There are also municipal elections in several other cities along Highway 43, including Satsuma, Saraland, and Chickasaw.

Mayor Bill Stewart is seeking a second term in the city, which started up its own school system during his first term.

Paul Murray is the other challenger in the race.

In Saraland, Dr. Howard Rubenstein will try to hold on to the mayor's position he was appointed to in 2011 following the death of longtime mayor Ken Williams.

Sidney Butler is the other candidate for Saraland mayor.

Byron Pittman is a sure winner in Chickasaw. He's running unopposed.

All of the candidates in Semmes are also unopposed.

The outcome on the other races will be up to voters on August 28.
