Even an average fishing day can make for a fun experience, but sometimes something special happens. I recently took a trip out of Pensacola with Captains Lance Powers and Brant Peacher.
We started out catching live menhaden with a cast net in a small bayou near the launch. After a short run, I hooked up on something big right away! It turned out to be a trophy Spanish mackeral.
“To me this is a monster Spanish, but to you it's big even being a guide ?"
"I run 125-150 trips a year and this is by far the biggest Spanish mackerel we have caught on any of my trips,” Captian Brant Peacher said.
The Florida state record is 12 pounds this was a ten pound Spanish mackerel. He is not far off a state record and you can tell he truly is a Spanish. Sometimes you’ll catch a king mackerel that will sometimes have these dots on him, but you can tell by the lateral line.
What a fine fish to start the day!
