With the cooler weather, your boat not be in the water much this time of the year, and the same goes for most lawn equipment.
Recent Federal laws now mandate that the vast majority of gas stations carry gasoline containing ten percent ethanol. This works fine in automobiles.
However, the E10 gasoline can cause big problems for small motors and boat engines.
Gas containing ten percent ethanol exposed to air will attract moisture, and make the fuel cloudy. Freshly poured gasoline will contain no water.
The moisture can cause performance issues. Local marine mechanics say it can also affect other parts of your engine.
"What it is doing is cutting old varnish and stuff that may be in the tank. It will cut that loose and send that back thru your carb or fuel injector," explained the mechanic at George's Watersports.
Boat engines aren't the only small motor affected.
"Lawn equipment, two cycle engines, weed eaters, chainsaws are impacted, generators, lawn mower engines. Any small engine equipment can be impacted."
Some tips to remember:
You can avoid ethanol all together. Some gas stations and most boat marinas will sell marine fuel. You can also try additives like a fuel stabilizer to help counteract the harmful effects.
