The Pascagoula River basin is a fantastic wetland habitat found in South Mississippi.
This area is widely known for its diverse population of birds. Herons Swallow Tail Kites, and the Osprey are common here. Songbirds and other species migrate through seasonally.
People like Mark LaSalle, Director of the Pascagoula River Audubon Society, work hard to protect this critical habitat.
The Pascagoula River is recognized as the last large unimpeded, or free flowing river in the continental United States. A combination of public lands, wildlife management areas, and nature conservancy properties help protect this valuable resource.
The Pascagoula River Delta system includes coastal marshes that stretch for miles inland and includes rivers like the Leaf, the Chickasawhay, and the Escatawpa.
The current center for the local Audubon chapter is found at the rivers edge in Moss Point. This local chapter is a part of the National Audubon Society. Summer camps and school groups help local kids to learn more about the environment. The Audubon Center also offers an interpretive boat tour led by an expert naturalist.
There are big plans for a new and improved facility for the Audubon society near Pascagoula.
We’ll bring you the latest on the new facility here on FOX10 as details are released in the next few weeks.
