The cooler mornings have fish in a biting mood. I recently had the opportunity to head to the marsh with Captain Joey Gates.
Captain Joey rebuilt a Texas-style flats boat, complete with sweet fishing tower. Our goal was to use raised deck to sight fish for some reds, but we started out chunking topwaters early on while we waited for the sun angle to improve.
The baitfish were thick along this stretch of bank and things looked promising. The trout were mixed in pretty nicely with the redfish and it made for some great action. It wasn’t long before a bigger red found my lure.
The top water bite slowed by 8 a.m. and it was time to go on the hunt.
