People who like the outdoors often are exposed to plenty of sun, and are at a higher risk for skin cancer. Just being outside is all takes to encounter UV radiation. Over time, this can lead to skin cancer. There are a number of types of cancers including melanoma and non-melanoma.
Melanoma is the most aggressive type of skin cancer. It's the one that can metastasize, although it comprises less than 5 percent of all skin cancers. It is the most deadly.
Dr. Jennifer Ronderos of Skin Perfection in Mobile says that 70,000 new cases of melanoma are detected each year and approximately 10 percent of these cases will result in death.
The key is treating the cancer before it spreads. Melanoma is one of those types of cancers that can be detected early. If it has not metastisized, it is completely curable with a simple incision.
However, the best way to avoid skin cancer is to use sunscreen with an SPF factor of 30 or higher. Harmful UV rays can also filter through clothing like t-shirts.
Wesley Parks of McCoy Outdoor Company showed us a number of types of special clothing that are made to block the sun. Doctors recommend yearly check up for adults to look for skin cancer. People with a history of melanoma, or a family history of melanoma should be checked every six months.
You can also do a self examination using the ABCD method for finding potential problem areas.
You need to look for Asymmetry, one half of the legion is different from the other.
The Border irregularity. The borders are not smooth.
The legion has Color variation. Different colors from one side to the other.
The last thing would be Diameter. Anything larger than 6mm in diameter is possibly a suspicious lesion.
Early detection and prevention are important to staying ahead of this deadly disease. So, get checked. Also, don’t forget to put on the sunscreen before you head out for your favorite activity.
