Canoeing along the Escatawpa River

This week on Fox Ten Outdoors, I take you out on a nice day on down the Escatawpa River. You really need a very small boat, because the water is shallow and you have to slide over logs occasionally. It is a blackwater stream. The water is clear to depths of up to four to five feet. But, the water slightly stained due to the pine and cypress tress along the riverbanks. Springs feed the water along the clay and sand banks. You will even see a few small waterfalls.

It's always a good idea to bring a fishing rod along. There are plenty of largemouth and spotted bass in the river. The spotted bass fight hard and have more distinct markings along the side. We have two spotted bass to show you, caught on weedless soft plastics. I also landed one very nice largemouth. The fish fight hard in the current. Light tackle is the key in the river. I like to use light line and smaller lures.
