WEEKS BAY, Ala. (WALA) - The Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Baldwin County is a great place to visit and explore.
The +6,000 acre tract helps protect vital wetlands along the shores of Weeks Bay and Mobile Bay. It also houses a free interpretive center that showcases the biodiversity of this brackish ecosystem.
Inside, there are snakes, alligators and aquatic species native to our area. There are also boardwalks and trails that lead through the lowland forest to the water’s edge.
The Weeks Bay Reserve is trying to protect this area for future generations, but also it’s important to have an area that will function as a living laboratory for scientists to learn more about estuaries and transfer that to coastal decision-makers.
Areas like Weeks Bay Reserve do more than just protect wildlife.
The property extends up fish and Magnolia Rivers. These are tidal areas where fresh and saltwater meet. These estuaries are important nurseries for the seafood industry.
The ecology of the area is tied to the economy.
We have learned that in the last few years how special that is, so we need to protect that resource. During the school year, education programs can be scheduled by the Education Coordinator for all ages.
The Reserve is open six-days-a-week Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. It is closed on Sunday. For more information, contact the Weeks Bay Reserve at (251) 928-9792 or check them out online at weeksbay.org .
