BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. - - Snare Quartet, “The Blanks,” comprised of Jakob Seull, Elijah King, Jody Hatcher, and Dylan Yates from Foley High School took first place honors at the second annual SUBWAY Baldwin Star Search presented by the Baldwin County Community Alliance on April 24, 2010. Rebecca Womack from Spanish Fort High School won second place with her vocal solo and third place honors went to Pierce Parker and Nicholas King from Daphne High School who performed an original guitar duet written by Nicholas King.

The event was held at the Wharf’s Conference Center and was open to students, parents, and community members as a drug and alcohol free family fun activity. High School students in Baldwin County signed drug-free pledge cards prior to the event and were given a wrist-band as their free admittance. There were a total of 12 acts and 30 contestants competing in this county-wide talent show. Each high school in Baldwin County held talent competitions from which their top winners advanced to perform at the SUBWAY Baldwin Star Search.

Baldwin County District Judy Newcomb continues to co-sponsor Baldwin County Star Search and at this year’s event she discussed the dangers of Methamphetamine and showcased her office’s ZEROMETH Public Awareness campaign. She also welcomed and introduced the law enforcement partners who participated in the event. Law enforcement personnel were in attendance to support their local communities and be available to interact with students on a more personal level. Wes Loper, a true South Alabama Coast native and resident also entertained the crowd during the first intermission. With his way of mixing Rock, County, Blues and Folk music he created his own style which left fans cheering for more. The Alabama Teen Challenge (ATC) Drill Team performed during the second intermission. The ATC Drill Team is comprised of seven to ten men who have memorized significant portions of scripture and in military drill fashion presents the message that anyone can be free from addictions through Christ.

The Baldwin County Community Alliance (BCCA) operates through Baldwin County Mental Health Center, Prevention Services. The BCCA is comprised of community agencies that meet regularly to discuss and implement strategies to target underage drinking and drug use among area youth. Our main focus for this year has been to decrease the access and availability of alcohol to minors.
