MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban is putting national championship dreams aside to focus on a big weekend: the Iron Bowl. That’s not the case for a lot of Alabama fans with restored hope for back to back national titles.
The Iron Bowl is the one day a year the state of Alabama is divided. Alabama fans are confident this year they will beat Auburn. The Tigers have had a bad season, but records don’t always matter when you’re talking about a rivalry. Gus Malzhan knows that all too well.
"Anything can happen," said Malzhan.
Malzhan is the Arkansas State head coach and spent three years as Auburn’s offensive coordinator. He knows this game is anything but predictable.
"I know it's a big game in this state, and it’s a big week. I was a part of it for three years, so I know everyone's got their game face on," said Malzhan.
Bama fan Brandy Dickson is looking past the Iron Bowl and straight to another BCS Championship. Something before this past weekend she didn’t think was in the cards.
"I'm sitting there going, 'Please let two of them lose so we have a chance again,'" said Dickson
And they did. Number 1 Kansas State and number 2 Oregon both lost, putting Alabama back into the National Championship picture.
"We were ecstatic," said Dickson.
Alabama is currently number 2 in the BCS standings. Notre Dame takes the top spot.
