Game of the Week: McGill-Toolen vs. Davidson

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Week four of our high school football Game of the Week features two 6A Region 1 powerhouses: the McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets paying a visit to the Davidson Warriors.

With a Murphy win over Blount, the winner of this match-up would sit alone atop the region.

Warriors Head coach Fred Riley said McGill-Davidson is a rivalry 50 years in the making.

"It's still that game where a lot of these kids know one another," Riley said. "They know one another by first name. [McGill quarterback Jason Smith] went to Burns Middle School with a lot of our kids and they grew up playing park ball together, so it’s a personal kind of game when it comes to that type of thing."

But the rivalry can’t possibly come down to two players. Or can it?

"It's going to be one heck of a quarterback battle," Riley said.

McGill's head coach Bart Sessions echoed that sentiment, saying the QBs have the edge Friday night.

In one corner, you have the undefeated visiting McGill-Toolen Yellow Yackets, lead by Jason Smith, an Auburn commit.

"I think that we’re going to come out on top," Smith said. "It's going to be a physical, fast game. Both teams are athletic. We look more athletic than we did last year."

In the other corner, you have Cam Jackson and the Warriors.

All the senior has done is lead his team to a 3-0 record, completing a ridiculous 84 percent of his passes. He has also created 150 or more yards with his feet alone each time out.

"I believe the winner of this game is going to win 6A Region 1, right here," Jackson said. "That means home field advantage through the playoffs, bragging rights, all of that."

With these two playmakers on offense, Sessions said the game could come down to who can make the most stops.

"Both defenses are going to be very challenged, just because the kind of player that's at quarterback," Sessions said. "Both kids can throw the ball well, both kids can hurt you with their feet as well, so it’s going to be interesting to see who plays the best team defense and can eliminate some mistakes. That’s the team that’ll probably come out on top."
