Game of the Week: Vigor at St. Paul's

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA - This Friday, the Game of the Week features the Vigor Wolves (5-2, 4-1) paying a visit to St. Paul's for a battle with the Saints (6-1, 5-0).

On the St. Paul’s practice field, you’re as likely to see junior linebacker Tre Williams instructing his teammates as making the tackle himself.

The three-year starter is a leader on both sides of the ball, literally, as he’ll even get reps at tight end and catch a pass or two.

But don’t let that fool you.  His passion lies in the trenches, leading a unit that is giving up only 7 points per game this season to region opponents.

And the junior’s efforts are gaining him attention.

“He’s probably going to be the number one prospect in the state next year," said St. Paul's head coach Steve Mask.  "He has been offered by just about everybody in the country.  But besides all that he’s a great football player but an ever better person, and we’re very proud of him.”

“It’s a total blessing, to just keep working hard to make myself better and my team better," Williams said.

But there’s a team only about five miles away that plans to keep Williams off-balance.  It's a team that plays with a swagger exclusive to the green and white.

“This is Vigor High School, we don’t expect to do anything but win," said Vigor head coach Kerry Stevenson.  “Regardless of where you are in the playoffs, this is your region people.  You want to make a statement; you want to go out there and compete with those guys everyday.  And whenever you step on this green field and white field with the white lines you want to win.  And that’s what our kids prepare to do everyday.”

“They don’t scare us at all," said Wolves center Markus Cook.  "They’re quick to the ball, but we feel like we’re good enough on offense to beat them.”

But not if Williams has something to say about it.

“Of course if we lose we go to third and we don’t want that," Williams said.  "We’ve won the region two years in a row and we can’t let that stop.”
