QB Jason Smith moves to receiver in all-star team

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - When you think Jason Smith, big plays from under center probably come to mind, whether they’re with his arm or his legs.

But the former McGill-Toolen quarterback is using those legs in a different way for the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game, getting in and out of breaks at wide receiver.

“I’m just playing my role,” Smith said.  “I like playing receiver, and I just want to help my team out in any way I can.”

This could be our only look at Smith out wide, as he says he plans to play quarterback for Auburn.

Despite a 3-9 season 2012 season, Smith says he’s 100 percent in his decision.  And just how he plans to help the Tigers in the future, he knows playing in this game gets some exposure for his old stomping grounds.

“It’s a big privilege coming out of McGill-Toolen,” Smith said.  “There haven’t been a lot of players who came out of there and got into this all-star game.  But, I’m glad to be in it and playing with the guys I’m playing with.  I’m getting to know them better, and I’m trying to recruit for Auburn.”

Smith may be headed for Jordan-Hare, but his heart will always rest in the port city.

“[Mobile] is a great place; I love it, and I’m going to always come back and visit,” Smith said.  “Down in Mobile, it doesn’t get any better than that.”
