SmartWatch, more than meets the eye

DAILY DOT COM - Parking meters, rearview mirrors, thermostats, and alarm clocks are arguably all smart gadgets we can't do without.

However, lately it's been all about smartphones, smart TVs and smart cars. But that too is seemingly about to change with the Sony SmartWatch .

Not all that original in name but check out the specs:

SmartWatch Features:

  • Check text messages
  • Read emails
  • Update Facebook and Twitter
  • Control music
  • Answer phone calls

The Sony SmartWatch started shipping in April, 2012.  It lets users read texts, emails and social networking updates from sites like Facebook or Twitter with just a tap, touch or swipe of the finger.  Plus, it supports about 60 other apps, too, including Google Maps, Weather and Gmail.

We first laid eyes on the device earlier this month at the Consumer Electronics Show.  It pairs with a nearby Android smartphone via Bluetooth, through a free app downloadable from Google Play.

According to the website, the SmartWatch will sell for about $149.00.  Included wristbands come in classic black, but if you feel like adding a splash of color, there are four additional colors to choose from: pink, mint, grey, white or blue (sold separately).  There’s a 1.3” OLED screen size display and an approximate battery life of 3-4 days.

To be fair, Timex actually first introduced us to all of this-- with the Ironman watch with Data Link.  It was the company's first watch to combine a personal digital assistant and released in the early 1990’s.

Blackberry also has a smartphone watch called inPulse. It’s due out later this year and should sell for $99.00.  Would you be interested in buying such technology?  Leave your comments below.
