MOBILE, Alabama (WALA) - Saturday’s scheduled 9 a.m. scrimmage for University of South Alabama football will mark the midway point between the start of preseason camp and the season opener.

With camp officially coming to a close as classes begin Monday morning, several positions are still up for grabs. Head coach Joey Jones is hopeful this weekend’s scrimmage at the practice fields on campus will provide some answers in regard to the depth chart.

“We’re trying to still evaluate players. Obviously we’re trying to progress offensively and defensively with all of our packages, but we’re still looking at individuals,” Jones said. “We can see things are starting to fall into place as far as the depth chart goes, but we obviously won’t make any decisions until after Saturday. After this week, we’ll focus more on polishing our offense and defense.”

In last week’s scrimmage, the offense gained 419 total yards while the defense forced three turnovers and recorded three sacks. The offense had three plays of 40-plus yards, two of which went for touchdowns. C.J.

Bennett accounted for 162 yards passing, going 7-of-13 with two touchdowns. Myles Gibbon finished 6-of-8 for 119 yards and two touchdowns, while Brennan Sim and Ray Cotton combined for 13 yards on four completions.

The Jaguar quarterbacks distrubuted the ball evenly in last week’s scrimmage, hitting 12 different receivers among the 17 completions.

T.J. Glover led with three receptions for 106 yards, and Lamontis Gardner caught two balls for 79 yards and a touchdown. Bryant Lavender and Corey Waldon added one touchdown apiece.

Several South Alabama running backs carried the ball last Saturday, led by Santuan McGee who rushed for 55 yards and a touchdown on three attempts. Ellis Hill and Ryan Scott added touchdown runs of two and seven yards, respectively.

Defensively, Enrique Williams and Bryson James led the charge as the two combined for seven tackles, two interceptions and one sack. Williams paced the Jags with four tackles, a sack and an interception, while James recorded three tackles and an interception.

“We did some good things, but overall too many mistakes were made,” Jones said of last week’s scrimmage. “I think the execution offensively needs to get better, and we need fewer negative plays.

Defensively, we don’t need to give up big plays. Last week, they (defense) played well but just gave up too many of those. I think if we can cut that out, then that would be a plus on the defensive side of the ball.”
