If you go to maps.google.com on your safari browser, it will take you to the mobile version of Google maps and all you have to do is hit "add to home screen" and it becomes part of your device as if it's an app even though it isn't. Google does say they are working on an official app but for now this is the only way to view Google maps on your Apple device.
