The 23rd annual Joe Cain Classic 5K Run, One Mile Run, and the Moonpie Dash for kids will be Sunday, February 10, 2013 at 8:00am. The event is organized by the Bay Area Runners, and for the past 22 years, the Joe Cain Classic Run has been the organization's primary focus.

The BARs are a diverse group of men and women from all walks of life who have joined together for the purposes of fun, fitness, fellowship and public service. Members are primarily from Mobile and Baldwin counties.

Proceeds from the Joe Cain Classic will be donated to The Exceptional Foundation of the Gulf Coast. Each year, proceeds from the race are given to a chosen program that supports athletes with physical and/or mental disabilities in the Mobile and Baldwin County area. Past recipients include: the Mobile Patriots wheelchair basketball team, a local triathlete who was attacked by a shark while training, a wheelchair road racer, Camp Rap-A-Hope, MARC, the "Hammerheads", a group of disabled swimmers, "Rhapsody in Blue" stables, a horse facility that provides therapeutic rides to people with disabilities, the Challenger League, a baseball league for disabled children, and the Baldwin County Special Olympics.

The race always takes place on Joe Cain Day, the Sunday before Fat Tuesday. This year's race is on the 10th. The course goes past the jail and through a scrap yard before returning the runners to the start/finish line at the intersection of Canal and Broad streets near the Mobile Civic Center.

There will be a post race party featuring live music, dancing in the street, food, door prizes, awards and a visit from Joe Cain’s Merry Widows. The oarty will be at South Broad Street and Augusta Street.

You must register for the race no later than Wednesday, February 6. Registration information and applications can be found online at http://www.active.comevent_detail.cfm?event_id=2063526 .
