Get ready to see superheroes in Mobile this fall. The History Museum of Mobile is proud to announce the opening of its original, one-time, exhibition "Up, Up & Away: Evolution of the American Comic Book Superhero". The exhibit explores how superheroes turned America's comic book industry into a multi-billion dollar enterprise.

It will tell the fascinating story of how Superheroes have evolved from before 1938's introduction of Superman to 2011's relaunch of DC's "New 52." Themes touched on by the exhibit include anti-heroes and sidekicks, historical and literary traditions of comic books and superheroes, character stereotypes and reflections of American heritage.

The exhibit will also feature more than 150 comic books and original superheroes drawn by local artists. From the exhibit's introduction: "Comic book Superheroes are a mirror of modern America. Superheroes represent the very best image of ourselves. Their worlds are purely fictional but their experiences and struggle s echo our own reality. Through Superheroes we celebrate our triumphs and confront our fears. This is their story."

The exhibit will open October 20, 2012 with a Superheroes Night at the Museum, which will be fun for the entire family. That night, visitors are encouraged to dress as their favorite villain or superhero. The exhibit will run through March 3, 2013.
