Cooking for the Community: Boston Butt Sale

Cooking for the Community's 2nd Annual Boston Butt Sale is underway.  You can pre-order yours today!

The mission statement of Cooking for the Community is to bring together people who desire to serve others in our community, and together share the love of Christ, building relationships and providing assistance to those in need.

Here is a brief history of the group provided by Cooking for the Community:

"It all started in October 2010 when a group of people came together to help paint a house. Halfway through the process, it was obvious the house needed way more than paint. It had 2 holes in the roof, mold infested, termite infested, windows missing and the foundation was shot. We did what we could but at best it was a band aid to a much bigger issue.

One of the organizers made a comment that day which would lay the foundation of some incredible things to happen. He said, “Remember it is way more important to build a relationship than to fix a house”.

From that point forward we spent every weekend down in this community just building relationships and getting to know them. It is amazing to see how the Lord was way ahead of us and how He was going to change the lives of people serving and being served. We started fixing some other homes, helped with transportation needs, provided meals during holidays and even started some tutoring in the area. Relationships started growing and people from all over started to help and get involved in our community. But in the back of our minds, we never finished what we started with the original home.
Several of the men who were working in this community also have a bible study every Wednesday morning. At one of the meetings last summer (August 2011) the question came up on how we were going to finish the house that we started working on with the holes in the roof. It was a big project that was going to require some big funds.

One of the guys shared how his son’s baseball team was knocked out of the all stars and that the team that beat them went on to win the state tournament which qualified them for the regional tournament. The team needed money to get to the tournament so they raised their funds by selling Boston Butts.
The guys in the bible study said if they can raise the money they needed for this tournament through selling Boston Butts, what could we do if we put our heads together and trusted the Lord to help us involve the community to serve the community. By the end of the day Cooking for the Community was formed. We were going to have our 1st Boston Butt Sale to help us raise the funds we needed to fix the house. We had no idea the journey we were about to go on and how so many people in our community wanted to help and we realized this was going to be bigger than this one project.
Our organization has restored homes that were in extreme disrepair with leaking roofs, missing windows, mold infested and plumbing problems.
We have also helped feed local families holiday dinners, provided Christmas packages for area children and provided beds, transportation and even tutoring to area families."
