Heart Walk 2012

Hundreds of people in South Alabama are teaming up with the American Heart Association to raise awareness and money for research.

Saturday, September 22, 2012 people will line up at the University of South Alabama for the first of two walks. There will also be a walk on October 6 at Heritage Park in Foley.

Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of all Americans, and someone dies from CVD every 38 seconds. Heart disease also kills more women than all forms of cancer combined. Congenital cardiovascular defects are the most common cause of infant death from birth defects.

The American Heart Association is the largest voluntary health organization working to prevent, treat and defeat heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.

Funds raised with the Heart Walk will support projects like:

  • Putting up-to-the-minute research into doctors’ hands so they can better prevent and treat heart disease among patients.
  • Groundbreaking pediatric heart and stroke research. About 36,000 babies are born with heart defects each year —research is the key to saving babies’ lives.
  • Getting life-saving information to those who need it most – information that can save a life, like how to eat better, how to recognize the warning signs of heart attack, and how to talk to a doctor about critical health choices.

In addition to the heart walk, there will be all kinds of heart healthy foods, fun activities for the kids and the first ever Mass CPR class for adults.  All the fun starts at 8am with the walk beginning at 9am.
