Mobile's Civil War Past

The University of Mobile's History and Art Departments have combined forces to present "The Art of Politics: Mobile's Civil War Past."

Dr. Lonnie Burnett of the University of Mobile History Department and Phillip Counselman of the University of Mobile Art Department will present an exhibit that includes more than 25 hanging pieces as well as 19th-century city of Mobile documents. The pieces were pulled from the resources of the university's Caldwell Delaney Historical Reference Collection as well as loans from private collectors.

You'll also see original illustrations from Harper's Weekly, Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, The New York Herald, and the New York Tribune-all highlighting Mobile's role in the great conflict on display on the campus of the University of Mobile.

There will also be Civil War era city documents including mayoral correspondence dealing with issues ranging from emergency finance measures to a license for public carriage operation on display. There are also prints from local artists such as Fairhope's Dean Mosher, and rare photographs and maps.

You can also see Award-Winning Historian Dr. William J. Cooper Jr., Boyd Professor of History at Louisiana State University, as he speaks during the University of Mobile's Billy G. Hinson Lecture Series. Dr. Cooper will deliver a lecture titled "Jefferson Davis and the Meaning of the Civil War".

Cooper will examine the evolving Constitutional thought of Confederate President Davis in relation to various views of the legality and necessity of secession. Burnett also noted that the topic is particularly timely as this spring marks the 150th anniversary of secession and the start of the American Civil War.
