For the third consecutive year, Gulf Coast veterinarians and vet techs will join together to participate in a Spay-a-thon. Beginning at 8:00 a.m. and continuing until 10:00 p.m., local animal care specialists will volunteer their time to alter as many cats and dogs as possible. The event, sponsored by Save a Stray, will take place at South Alabama Spay and Neuter Center.
The last Tuesday in February is National Spay Day, a day dedicated to encouraging pet owners to be responsible and spay or neuter their pets to prevent unwanted puppies and kitties. Spring is considered puppy and kitty season. February was chosen to hopefully prevent many of the unwanted animals from ending up in animal shelters and on the streets across the nation.
Surgeries are provided free of charge but an appointment is necessary. Those who desire to have their pet spayed or neutered during the Spay-a-thon can make arrangements to do so by calling South Alabama Spay and Neuter Center at 251-343-5033.
Monetary donations and cleaning supplies are welcomed to help support this event. To donate money, please visit http://www.saveastray.org. Supplies of bleach, paper towels and all-purpose spray cleaner can be dropped off to South Alabama Spay and Neuter Center at 3488 Springhill Avenue.
Save a Stray is a non-profit organization in Mobile, Alabama designed to enrich the lives of shelter pets in Mobile County. For more information, please visit www.saveastray.org .
