The 2012 Stand Down for Homeless Veterans will be held Thursday, October 11, 2012 from 8am until 2pm at the James Seals, Jr. / Texas Street Recreation Center, 540 Texas Street In Mobile.
The term "Stand Down" is a military term that calls for respite and being re-supplied. For homeless veterans or any veteran needing services and housing, it’s a way the community can provide outreach and assistance. By doing so, the community expresses its concerns for veterans who have served honorably but need encouragement and a helping hand.
The October 2011 Stand Down served 142 veterans, including 2 women and 89 who reported being homeless or At-Risk of being homeless. Thirty community and government agencies, including the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs, were on-hand. One-hundred and fifty-seven volunteers and agency personnel helped provide information and services, distributed clothing and personal care supplies, and served lunch.
Organizers need your help with the 2012 Stand Down on October 11, 2012. The annual event has become an important means for reaching veterans in the Mobile and Baldwin area. You can help in several ways:
*Distribute the Stand Down flyer and get the word out to veterans
*Donate items to be given away to those in need
*Serve as a volunteer on October 10 (set-up day) or October 11 (the event)
*Help provide transportation services to and from the event
It is an honor to help those who have served our nation, kept us safe, and now need our help to cope with hard times.
