28th Annual JazzFest in Pensacola

The Jazz Society of Pensacola's 28th Annual JazzFest is coming up this weekend!
The event is set for Saturday, April 2nd from 10:30am to 7:15pm, with a Jam Session from 8pm to 10pm. It continues Sunday, April 3rd from 10:30am to 6:45pm.
Pensacola JazzFest 2011 will be held in Seville Square. A beautiful park located in the center of historic downtown Pensacola. The venue location features a sprawling live oak canopy and a picturesque central gazebo used as the main stage. Seating is provided, though many of attendees bring lawn chairs and picnic baskets, or purchase food from one of the quality food vendors.
JazzFest is a free, family-oriented festival that celebrates all types of jazz and attracts approximately 16,000 enthusiastic listeners over the weekend. The music will include a variety of jazz styles, presented by prominent national, regional and local artists, as well as area college and high school jazz bands. In addition, the winner of the Phillips Jazz Piano Competition will perform, as well as the finalists in the Jazz Society’s first Student Jazz Competition. There is also a "Jazz Jam for Kids" both days at 2:00 p.m., with harmonicas and kazoos provided to the children for free. An arts and crafts exhibition is included to enhance the festival atmosphere and add value for festival attendees.
A new addition to the JazzFest is a Saturday night JazzFest Jam Session, to be held at the Hilton Garden Inn, Airport Blvd. (1144 Airport Blvd., Pensacola). The Hilton Garden Inn is one of the JazzFest’s major sponsors, and many of the out-of-town musicians as well as locals will be staying there.
Headlining musicians have been invited to mix it up with area jazz artists at the Saturday night Jam Session. Public invited. Students welcome! $10 per person, participating musicians free. Light menu and full bar available for purchase.
The Jazz Society of Pensacola (JSOP) has been the sole presenter of the Pensacola JazzFest since 1999, following WUWF-FM’s tenure as event presenter. The event is presented as a gift to the community from Jazz Society members and its sponsors, and funds are raised in various ways throughout the year. Over $10,000 is raised from both JSOP member and non-member donors who are dedicated to seeing this annual event take place.

Ted Howe
Born in Boston, MA, Ted began studying piano in his teens with Harry Smith, one of the legendary founders of the Berklee School of Music. He soon became not only a student at Berklee, but a professor of piano arranging, theory and improvisation –all before the age of 24. After a two year stint as a pianist in the Army, Ted became bandleader at The Surf Supper Club, playing, conducting and arranging for some of the biggest acts of the time. He moved his family to Atlanta where he continued to share the stage with many of the great jazz artists of the day, such as Mel Torme–who refused to sing with anyone else on his visits to Atlanta. Howe also joined the faculty of Georgia State University where he helped develop its first jazz education program. Now living in Los Angeles and a Summit Records recording artist, Ted continues to record, produce, arrange and perform extensively.
JB Scott’s Swingin’ All Stars
This fine group of musicians is dedicated to the playing of Chicago Swing/New Orleans style Dixiland Jazz in an entertaining, musical, and spirited fashion! Led by the flamboyant, virtuoso trumpeter, JB Scott, a former musical director of the Dukes of Dixieland, the group also features award-winning vocalist Lisa Kelly, and the unique vocal styling of banjo/guitarist Ken Calhoun, legendary trombonist Dave Steinmeyer, formerly
with the Airmen of Note, clarinetist Jim Snyder, also a former Dukes of Dixieland member, bassist Rick Ravelo, and drummer Eric Mason. Rick Trolsen Quintet
Rick began playing trombone at the age of twelve. After studying with Phil Wilson at Berklee College of Music, he volunteered three years of duty with the U.S. Navy Band, stationed in New Orleans. Upon his discharge he quickly was adopted as a regular call sideman in town. In 1991 he started the jazz/rock group “Neslort” as a vehicle for his original compositions. A perennial favorite at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, “Neslort” has featured some of the finest musicians in town, and has recorded 2 CD’s. Versatile and at ease with contemporary and traditional jazz, blues, reggae, big bands, show music and club dates, Rick has performed and/or recorded with the following: the Woody Herman Band, Harry Connick Jr., the Temptations, Al Grey, Barry Manilow, Bob Hope, Steve Allen, Aretha Franklin, Boz Scaggs, The O’Jay’s, Natalie Cole, Dr. John, Clarence”Gatemouth” Brown, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Henry Mancini, Rosemary Clooney, Allen Toussaint, Al Hirt, Doc Severinsen, Johnny Cash, and many others. Steve Gilmore
Steve’s musical experiences began at age twelve when he played in Pennsbury (PA) High School’s progressive music program. By age fourteen he was being hired to play at the local beer hall for eight or ten dollars a night. A few years later he expanded his playing to area symphony orchestras and local big bands. Living close to Philadelphia enabled him to hear such fine players as
John Coltrane, Max Roach, Sonny Rollins and Wynton Kelly, integrating what he was hearing into his own music. After high school, Gilmore spent a short time in Toronto attending the Advanced School of Contemporary Music. Ray Brown was his teacher. Upon his return to Pennsylvania in 1961, Steve worked the Pocono Mountains resorts, developing by playing regularly, and with, some very fine musicians including Bob Newman, Jerry Dodgion, Ray Bryant and Jerry Segal. In 1967, Steve left the Poconos for Miami and stayed for four years, working with jazz great Ira Sullivan and others. Another move back to the Poconos in 1971 associated him with drummer Bill Goodwin, and together they formed the rhythm team for several bands including the Chamber Jazz Quintet, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims, Tom Waits, Mose Allison and the National Jazz Ensemble. In 1974 Gilmore and Goodwin both joined the Phil Woods Quartet at its inception and anchor the Quintet to this day.
Local favorites that will be performing include Jones & Company, vocalist Kathy Lyon, The Guffman Trio, vocalist Holly Shelton with pianist David Shelander, and the Joe Occhipinti Big Band. In addition, selected college, high school and middle school jazz bands will round out the schedule.
