The Lighthouse is in the process of building a pet kennel in our shelter.
One might ask why a domestic violence shelter may need a kennel? The fact is there is a strong correlation between domestic abuse and animal abuse. Many victims of domestic violence will not leave an abusive situation because they fear abandoning their beloved pet. Others may leave out of necessity, but the fact is, the pet may be abused in the absence or in lieu of the victim.
The Lighthouse would like to remove that obstacle for victims of domestic violence who are choosing to evade abuse. This project is partially funded by the grant from the Gimbel Foundation, but it does not cover all of the cost. The Lighthouse is asking the community to support this worthwhile project. They need financial support as well as volunteer support. They also need a veterinarian or clinic that would be willing to provide a pet the necessary vaccinations to be in a kennel.
The kennel will provide for ample space for each animal and offer space for families to play with their pet in a safe and secure environment.
