As Americans become more health conscious, some people involved in the food industry follows suit. But Dr. Snellgrove from Eastern Shore Weight Loss says beware of "buzz words" such as “grilled” or “whole wheat” that make products appear healthier because these claims may not always hold true.

Here are a few examples from Dr. Snellgrove:

1. Prepared Salads: Don’t just assume that it’s “healthy” because it’s a salad. Prepared tuna salads, chicken salads and shrimp salads are often loaded with hidden fats and calories. If you’re ordering out, opt for prepared salads made with low-fat mayo, keep the dressing to the side and keep the portion to about the size of a deck of cards.

2. Multi-grain and Wheat Bread: These may sound healthy, but many breads labeled “multi-grain” or “wheat” are typically made with refined grains so you’re not getting the full nutritional benefit of the whole grain. Be sure to read labels carefully and look for words like “bleached”. If it’s in there, you’re not getting 100% whole grain bread.

3. Enhanced Water: Most nutrient-enhanced waters are no better than a soda which means they’re full of sugar and empty calories which can pack on the pounds over time. Usually the vitamins they provide do not offset the sugar.

4. Sushi: Most people think that sushi is healthy, but the average roll has very little protein. White rice is a high-glycemic food, which can promote a rapid increase in blood sugar and insulin followed by a rapid drop which will just make you want to eat more.

5. Granola: Granola tastes so good because it’s usually loaded with added sugar and oil. This makes granola exceptionally high in calories.
