Dr. Snellgrove from Eastern Shore Weight Loss says more than 60% of Americans are classified as overweight or obese and most would benefit from trimming down. He says lifestyle changes that include healthier diets, regular physical activity and weight loss of 7-10% can actually be more effective than most medications. 

For people who are considered overweight can reap health benefits from losing weight. Lowering body weight can reverse or prevent diabetes, lower blood pressure, cholesterol and tryglyceride levels. Weight loss can also improve sleep apnea and other sleep problems, along with helping you to feel better about yourself.

Losing weight can be especially beneficial for people who store their excess weight in their abdomens. People who store fat in their abdomen are at greater risk for heart disease, but those people should also have an easier time losing weight.

People who eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly will also have more energy. You should have more energy and feel better overall when you lose just ten pounds.

If you have osteoarthritis in your knees, you are likely to see quick improvement there when you start to lose weight. Being overweight or obese puts a lot of stress on your knee joints in particular. Losing weight makes it easier for you to move your joints. If you’re taking medication for blood pressure or diabetes, your doctor may be able to take you off your medication or lower your dosage once you lose weight.
