The three most common types of skin cancer are Melanoma, Basal Cell, and Squamous Cell. Melanoma can occur on any skin surface. Common places melanoma can be found are on the head, neck, shoulders, back, legs, and hips.

Basal cell skin cancer begins in the basal cell layer of the skin, and is usually found in areas that are exposed to the sun. Squamous cell skin cancer begins in squamous cells and is usually found on areas of the body that are not exposed to the sun.

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that everyone practice a monthly head-to-toe self skin examination. Look for any skin changes, and if you feel that that could be cancerous or precancerous, see a Board Certified Dermatologist.

Treatment for skin cancer depends on the type, stage, size, and location of the cancer, and your medical history. Many types of skin cancers can be removed if found and treated early stages. A skin biopsy may completely remove a patient's skin cancer. Sometimes surgery, chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy, or radiation therapy may be needed.

Prevention is key and the best way to prevent skin cancer is by protecting yourself from the sun. Wear long sleeves and pants and hats outside. Wear sunglasses to protect the skin around your eyes. And apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 15, and be sure to reapply is you're sweating or swimming.
