Rheumatology is a medicine specialty that concentrates on arthritis and autoimmune disease such as vasculitis and lupus. Arthritis is a condition that results in joint pain and, typically, joint damage.
The two main types of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, resulting in joint space narrowing and bone on bone damage. The risk for osteoarthritis is higher as we get older, suffer trauma or gain weight. Unlike osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis results in inflammation of the lining of the joint. This inflammation can result in joint swelling and pain. If left untreated, inflammation can chew away at the joint resulting in long term damage. The good news is that are a lot of great treatment options for
rheumatoid arthritis.
If a person is overweight, that person has a greater risk of developing arthritis. The knee and hip bear up to three times your body weight with every step. Studies have shown, in an average person, that losing 10 to 15 pounds can cut the risk of osteoarthritis in half. Furthermore, obesity carries an increased risk of gout, which is an inflammatory arthritis that can result in severe pain and joint destruction.
People with arthritis face day to day challenges. Pain is the biggest issue, as well as long term damage and loss of joint function. Chronic pain from arthritis can be debilitating and result in fatigue, depression and whole body pain. Arthritis patients often have difficulty relating to others just how their disease affects not only their joints, but their whole body.
There any over-the-counter treatments that can help with symptoms, but it's best to see your doctor if you're experiencing any of the symptoms associated with arthritis. Any evidence of joint swelling or suffering from prolonged joint pain would be a good indication to talk to your physician.
