Tips on a Child's First Trip to the Dentist

While most children have a positive experience during their first visit to the dentist, there are times when some can be more nervous about seeing a dentist for the first time.

Dr. Natasha Varma, a Mobile dentist with Vital Smiles, says parents have a big impact on a child’s feelings about going to the dentist for the first time.

“The best approach is to tell your child the dentist is someone who will help protect their beautiful smile,” says Dr. Varma, who practices at both Vital Smiles offices at 2727 Pleasant Valley Rd and 1501 Spring Hill Rd.  “It helps sets a positive tone from the onset.” She adds parents should not frame a visit to the dentist as a form of punishment with threats such as “if you don’t brush your teeth, you’re going to have to go to the dentist” or “the dentist is going to have to fill a cavity if you don’t brush.”

“A child’s fear is based on the unknown,” Dr. Varma adds.  “Instead of emphasizing those fears, a parent should reassure their child the dentist is there to help them.”  In anticipation of the visit, parents can find books about their child's favorite fictional character's first dental visit.  The child can easily relate to the character and the experience described in the story.

Besides setting a positive tone for their child, parents should be well informed of what to expect on the child’s first trip to the dentist.

The first visit is considered a “well-baby check.”  This is a time for both the parent and the child to establish a comfort level with the dentist.  At this first visit, the dentist will provide preventive care and education including information on oral health and who to call in the event of an emergency.

A child’s first dentist appointment can include a knee-to-knee exam, where the dentist will briefly examine the child’s teeth, mouth and face development.  The child is introduced to the idea that someone is going to look in their mouth and brush their teeth.  Each subsequent dental visit is designed to build patient's familiarity with the dental office and staff.

Finally, the dentist will explain the proper practices to help keep your child cavity free. Suggestions include brushing your child’s teeth twice daily and giving them only water to drink except during mealtime. At this time, your dentist will also answer your questions about your child’s dental health.

Dr. Varma also suggests parents set the first-time appointment for earlier in the day when the child is most likely alert and not worn down from the day’s activities.

Building a positive image of the dentist is an important first step in a lifetime of well-maintained oral health for your child. Explain how the dentist will help your little one keep their beautiful smiles for years to come and you’ll be in good shape for that first trip to the dentist.
