Women in Mobile and Pensacola are meeting up and exchanging items at Ladies Nights Out and at Mommy and Me Play groups to connect, develop friendships and save money. It's all part of "Secondhand Sisterhood", which was created by Stephanie Jones in her kitchen in Mobile in January 2012.
Stephanie was looking for a simple idea to sell her gently used baby items. Little did she know it would grow from an intimate group of 67 women on Facebook to almost 8,000 members with more than 1,000 interactions per day. It soon caught on in Pensacola, Gulfport and Birmingham, and now there are more than 10,000 members.
Stephanie was spending upwards of four hours per night on Facebook moderating the groups. But she wanted it to go further than Facebook.
She felt there were multiple problems with the social networking site that would never be resolved. She says she was getting complaints from sellers not being able to locate their listings, and from just as many buyers. That prompted Stephanie and her husband Jeff to partner with a computer programmer to develop their dream website where buyers and sellers could buy, sell and socialize more easily.
June 2, 2012 marked the official launch of the internet home for Secondhand Sisterhood at www.SecondhandSisterhood.com . For $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year, women can buy, sell, and socialize in an exclusive group designed just for them. All items are organized and able to easily be searched.
Currently there are more than over 17,000 items listed on www.Secondhandsisterhood.com . An average of 200 items are sold daily.
