There’s just one more day until we have to square up with Uncle Sam if you haven't already. Income taxes are due April 17th. Procrastinators have two extra days this year because April 15th was a Sunday, so the post office was closed and Monday is Emancipation Day, a holiday in Washington DC celebrating the freeing of slaves in the district.
If you're one of those last minute filers still trying to meet the deadline, time is of the essence, so tax preparers suggest getting a little help. The biggest common mistakes they see are people not having all of their deductions and paperwork.
Ann Law, Senior tax preparer at Law Tax Service, said, "Make sure you have all of your tax documents, your interest income. Make sure you have every W2, 1099 all of your expenses together for medical, dental, contributions, church, miscellaneous."
Whether you mail it in or e-file, taxes are due April 17th. If you can't make the deadline, you still need to make payment arrangements and file an extension. Preparers said if you don't have anything paid on the 17th you will have penalties and interest added to it.
