Tips to keep your dog cool this summer

The summer heat not only gets to you, but it also affects your dogs. You shouldn't leave your dogs outside in this summer heat when you're not home. Of course dogs like to spend a little time outside, so when you get home, let them out for a little while, but make sure they have shade and plenty of water.

If you have a dog with light or pink skin, your dog will need sunscreen. Just like people with lighter skin, your dog's skin can burn easily.

But there are more dangers in your yard in addition to the sun. Some plants can be toxic to dogs. If your dog starts acting sick and you think he or she may have ingested a poisonous substance, contact your local veterinarian immediately. You can also call the ASPCA's emergency poison hotline at 1-888-426-4435. You'll find a complete list of plants that are toxic to dogs, cats, and horses online at http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/plants/ .

If you have a pool in your back yard, it can be a hazard to your dogs. While some dogs are natural swimmers, others may not be. It may be good to put your dog in your pool while you're in it to make sure he or she can swim. If they can't, watch them extra close when they are around your pool.

Most dogs love to travel, so when you plan your vacation, you might want to think about including your companion. If you are going somewhere that doesn't accept pets, you could look into a pet hotel or sitter service like Puppy U to take care of your dog baby while you're away.

Keep in mind that people will be shooting fireworks on holidays like July 4th. Most dogs are afraid of the loud noises. There have been reports of dogs running away if they are outside and hear fireworks because the sound stresses them out. So it''s a good idea to make sure your dogs are inside and comfortable when people are shooting fireworks.
