Alabama's bad weather sales tax holiday this weekend

Alabama residents buying supplies they need to make it through times of severe weather will not have to pay sales tax for certain items this weekend. The holiday from sales tax will begin at 12:01 a.m. Friday and will run through the end of the day on Sunday.

Supplies costing less than $60.00, including batteries and first aid kits, can be purchased free of the state's four percent tax rate.

Portable generators, $1,000 or less, are also included. Bill Clark told FOX10 why he is stocking up.

“Almost every week we have the potential for some serious weather. So why not take advantage of a day like this,” said Clark.

 David Normand. With the Home Depot said some important items may not be on display at the front of the store, but you should still consider  buying them.

"Generally, it's good to have a carbon monoxide detector if you use a portable generator. Because you don't want that carbon monoxide fumes to get in the house that creates a dangerous situation,” said Normand.  

Clark believes staying prepared for severe weather is just a part of living on the gulf coast.

“I need an assortment of batteries for my different flashlights, my night light. And of course I am here also to get some material I may need in terms of flooding,” said Clark.

Normand says items like Plywood and ice chests are included on the sales tax, but sometimes get overlooked.
