Dauphin Island readies for Isaac

DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. (WALA) - While many waited on Sunday for the next update on tropical storm Isaac, some surfers waited for the perfect wave.

On Dauphin Island's west end, a few people lined the beach and braved the water, but at least one property owner boarded up her home for Isaac.

“We may have overshot it by doing it too early, but better to be prepared than not prepared,” said Lisa Young.

Young, who lives in Mobile, said her father built one of the two properties her family now rents on Bienville Boulevard.

They both have hurricane history and credibility.

“The A-frame next door was built prior to Hurricane Camille ... this one's been through Frederick and everything since,” said Young.

Young said a paying renter is scheduled to check in on Friday. So she was doing double duty on her rentals: cleaning and protecting.

“I'm just hoping for the best, the island is just such a treasure ... we're just hoping we can hold on to what we've got right now,” said Young.

On Sunday, the two rental houses donned their armor and prepared to persevere.

That's exactly what you can say about Dauphin Island resident Kim Childers, she perseveres.

“I stayed during hurricane Katrina, I'm just not that sure if it's going to be that strong,” said Childers.

Childer feels her east end home is buffered by neighbor’s trees, but one thing may cause her to leave the island.

“Direct impact ... eye of the storm coming our way,” she said.
