MOBILE, Ala. - Ida has weakened to a Tropical Storm. There's no need to put the hurricane boards up, but you do need to take some precautions.

Waves from Dog River began to violently crash along areas near Dauphin Island Parkway early Monday. A sign, for area residents, to begin their preparation.

Tropical Storm Ida is expected to bring heavy rain, which folks said could be very dangerous.

"The wind shouldn't do much if it's below hurricane force, but the rising water is a big problem," said Dan Sayers.

"It affects everyone that has a boat or that works here. Where we're standing will be 5 feet deep over our heads in each stall. The boats will go through the roof if you have too much of a storm surge," Edward Leatherbury added.

Many people south of Interstate 10 are protecting their property from flooding.

"Just have to prepare for it and be prepared to do the extra work it takes to live on the water," Bo Palmer said.

Palmer spent the day safeguarding his home. He tied down his hot tub and everything loose in the yard.

"Some hoses, lawn furniture that stays out on the dock, grandchildren's toys," he said.

Living on the water is bittersweet for Palmer, the view and access is wonderful, but it comes with a price, he's paid all too often. A marker shows you just how close the water comes to Palmer's home. He put it there last year after the rains from Gustav flooded about 40 feet of his land.

"That water comes up and covers the grass. After the storm is down, there's a little trash in the yard," Palmer added.

The river is expected to rise, but folks are hoping their precautions pay off. They say a few extra safety measures could save you from thousands of dollars in damage.
