MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Officials said the Mobile Area Water & Sewer System (MAWSS) is experiencing numerous sanitary sewer overflows as a result of heavy rainfall in the Mobile and Prichard areas that began August 29 from Hurricane Isaac.
Dr. Bernard Eichold, Health Officer with the Mobile County Health Department advises area residents to take precautions when coming into contact with any standing water that may have accumulated as a result of these overflows.
He said individuals who have come into direct contact with untreated sewage are advised to wash their hands and clothing thoroughly.
Dr. Eichold also advises area residents to take precautions if using affected waters for recreational purposes.
HE said all seafood harvested in affected areas should be thoroughly cooked before consumption. Individuals should wash their hands after cleaning any fish or other seafood and also before preparing food.
The location, estimated amount and receiving waters are listed below. Overflows that are still ongoing are shown with asterisks.
