OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WALA) - Amanta Wallace has lived in her home 55 years and said she has been through eight to ten storms in her lifetime. She said the two worst storms were Hurricane Camille and Katrina but even those, didn’t make her leave her home and seek shelter.

“For every storm, I’ve been right in my house. During Camille, I had 39 people in this house,” Wallace said.

Wallace, 73, said  her brother recently moved in to help her take care of the home after her husband died five years ago.  With his help, the two of them plan to board up the den and kitchen windows.

And Wallace isn’t the only one getting ready along the Mississippi coastline. Most of her neighbor’s windows are covered with wood and Wallace said the stores have been cleaned out.

“You go by one of the stores and it’s so full, it’s jam packed.  Every store around you is jammed to the max,” Wallace said.

Wallace said she feels safe in her home and believes the Lord will protect her but she is afraid for other people’s safety.

“I just hate to see people outdoors with no food and no water. I’ve seen all of this, and it’s never anything you want to see. No lights for days and you lose everything. I do hate that, and I know that could happen. I’ve seen it,” Wallace said.
