FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WALA) - A wicked storm spawned an impressive waterspout over Mobile Bay Tuesday morning. It happened right off the beach in Fairhope.
Many viewers saw it, took pictures and even sent video to reportit@fox10tv.com.
Waterspout, not tornado
Dianne Herzog was facing south at the Fairhope pier as a waterspout formed kicking up spray and heading for land (video to the left.)
At the Orange Avenue pier, Holly Nelson was taking a series of incredible pictures of the same weather event. They are so detailed you can see the actual structure of the spout in them.
Also in Nelson's picture, a lady runs along the beach with her dog just a couple hundred yards from the spout.
Susan Stein was just a few blocks further north and she was also taking pictures. She said, “I was expecting a roar or something, instead it was just a little shhhh… It was not much sound at all. Just wind blowing.”
Stein said the waterspout was so quiet some people had no idea it was there.
She said, “There were some other ladies walking the other way and they weren’t even aware that there was a waterspout behind them and I was thinking 'They need to turn around and look!'”
From start... to finish
In Downtown Fairhope Fred Turner watched the spout from beginning to end.
“It was small when it started off right here,” Turner said pointing over the tops of some buildings to the north. “It started moving to the south then all of a sudden it got bigger and bigger. It slowed down and it got to right over here at the top of the building and like a big fog it just went away.”
"Wasn’t that cool?” Herzog exclaimed at the end of the video as the spot dissapates.
No one was injured and no damage was reported due to the waterspout.
To everyone that sent in pictures and video, thank you, and please remember you can always send in your submissions to reportit@fox10tv.com
