Food fight! Thousands duel in 'tomato battle'

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CNN/KFMB) - It's a food fight of epic proportions. Thousands gathered in San Diego for the annual Tomato Battle.

It's a California twist on a Spanish tradition. Participants wage all out war with 46,000 pounds of tomatoes.

"It's a chance to blow off some steam. Maybe hit some people in the face," said one participant.

The tomatoes used in the fight are past ripe and would otherwise be thrown away.
