Tighter restrictions on athletes, coaches

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - A New Hampshire teenager who has struggled in school since suffering a concussion three years ago says she hopes a new law aimed at protecting other high school athletes is just the beginning.

Lauren Caruso, who was injured during lacrosse practice at Timberlane Regional High School, spoke at a bill signing ceremony Monday in Concord. Under the new law, coaches and other athletic officials who suspect that a student athlete has sustained a concussion will be required to remove him or her from play immediately, and the athlete will have to get written authorization from a health care provider and parent before returning.

Caruso says she hopes those rules eventually will be extended to younger children and those involved in community recreation leagues.
