WASHINGTON (AP) - A White House source said Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius isPresident Barack Obama's choice for secretary of health
and human services. A formal announcement is expectedMonday.
Sebelius is in the middle of her second term as governor. Foreight years prior to that, she was the Kansas insurancecommissioner, drawing praise for her role as a consumerwatchdog.
Lawmakers in both parties agree the state has made progress onhealth care since Sebelius became governor in January 2003. Thestate has expanded cancer screenings, allowed more Kansans can keeptheir health insurance up to 18 months after leaving their jobs andgranted income tax deductions that helped people lower theirinsurance costs.
Kansas has also increased funding for "safety net" clinics,expanded state medical and dental coverage for pregnant women andstarted no-interest loans to help small businesses formassociations to provide health plans for employees.
