MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Alabama Senate Minority Leader Vivian Davis Figures responded Thursday, July 18 to some controversial comments she made this week.
She told a group of Democrats "racism" has played a role in the rise of the Republican Party in Alabama.
In an interview with FOX10, Figures said, "I think they have used the racist tactic of running a lot of their campaigns, which is part of the old fashioned race baiting, which is why they throw President Obama's picture up in their ads, and they just bash him continuously as if they were running against him personally."
State GOP leaders have since called for an apology. But in her first interview since her comments, Senator Figures told FOX10 News she has nothing to apologize for.
Figures said, "What happened is, that I was talking to this audience in Homewood Tuesday night, and it was a 76 percent white audience, and we were talking about how Republicans have run their races, and I said it was amazing to me that seemingly all the campaigns are run against the President, Barack Obama, and the only reason was, was that he was black."
But the Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party, Bill Armistead, has said voters weren't choosing candidates on race, but on policies.
