MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - In just a few days, businesses in Alabama will have to get on board with E-Verify. Starting Monday, under the Alabama Immigration Law, all new hires will have to be checked through the system.
It's nothing new to George Huth at Snelling Staffing Services.
"It's fairly simple," he said.
All of their employees are checked using the system. Starting April 1, the same will go for all businesses in Alabama.
"They don't need to freak out. It's not that difficult," said Huth.
Under the Alabama Immigration Law, every new hire must be checked to be sure he or she is a legal citizen.
Kathryn Kennedy with the Alabama Department of Homeland Security said E-Verify is there to help businesses in this process.
"We're providing the service so that employers don't feel such a heavy burden on making sure and doing due diligence that the person they are hiring is a legal citizen," said Kennedy.
There are two ways to get on board.
If you are a business with fewer than 25 employees, use the service on the Alabama Department of Homeland Security webpage or call 1-855-VERIFY-6.
If you have more than 25 employees, the federal government provides access to the program. Once you register your business, you just enter the new hires information.
If the name doesn't match the social security number, an alert pops up.
"We haven't had any problems with it. It's fairly simple. We may have had about two alerts out of 1,000," said Huth.
If you don't run your employees through E-Verify, you could face some penalties.
For the first offense, you could be forced to terminate the employee; your business could be put on a three year probation, in which you have to file a quarterly report with the district attorney's office; and you have to sign a sworn affidavit saying you have terminated the employee and wont employee any illegal citizens.
If you get caught again, the penalties are more severe.
