FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WALA) - Some Mobile dogs are hard at work keeping creepy critters out of your bed. These smart canines are being trained to sniff bed bugs.
Bed bugs are creepy little bugs that take over your bed and leave you with blood sucking nightmares.
"I would think in the next five years we are going to see a lot more," said Jennifer Morgan with Bug Out K9 Academy.
That's why expert trainer Morgan is getting her pups ready to find these devious critters.
Ben and Jerry are beagle pups and still in training and working hard.
Morgan uses what she calls "a wheel of fortune' with six arms. The device is on the ground and spins. The arms are attached to containers at the end.
"Each one of them has a container in it and one of them has a bed bug in it. So we have them go around and we have them check each one of the containers and the one with the bed bug in it we click and we reinstate," said Morgan.
Jerry lays down when he finds a bug but each dog does things differently.
Sirius is an Australian shepherd who is no stranger to detecting. Unlike Jerry, Sirius barks when he finds a bed bug.
"Sirius wants you to know; he's going to tell you. He's going to scream his head off and tell you," said Morgan.
Sirius is a well trained detection dog ready to come to the rescue.
"We go out and we check schools and hotels and if someone wants us to check for bed bugs we can do that," said Morgan.
Jerry is being trained in a family of pros. Sirius also sniffs termites, cadavers and live persons.
Nick, a handsome black lab, knows dozens of commands. He can even get you a soda from the fridge.
Morgan said a recent study out of the University of Florida showed dogs have a 98 percent accuracy rate on finding bed bugs while humans are only at 30 percent.
